Chapter Fifteen

Pierce had followed Jake out the back door of the lodge and waved Art over to explain the situation. Art didn’t hesitate to help Pierce with his plan to pull the boy out of his funky mood. The three of them headed out to the back forty in the old Chevy truck. They had no luck spotting the wayward stallion until around one o’clock when they agreed it was time to head back and catch a late lunch.

That’s when Thunder made his flashy appearance.

Pierce eased off the dirt track and shoved the gear of the truck into park. “He looks much better than he did last winter.”

Jake occupied a jump seat behind the bench. “Is that him?” His voice was barely above a whisper. The kid sounded in awe of the mighty beast.

Pierce turned and smiled at the boy. Jake loved horses. Since Art was the primary person who took care of the stock, Jake was like glue to the man’s side. Art stated often that he didn’t mind. Once he said Jake was like the son he’d never had. Pierce had grown incredibly fond of the boy as well, just as he had grown incredibly fond of Johanna. He shook the thought off and concentrated on the stallion. The horse lifted his nose and snorted as if taunting them.

Pierce rolled down the window to get a better look. “Let’s see if he’ll let us get closer.”

The three of them exited the truck and walked slowly toward the horse. Art pushed his hat back from his forehead and then rubbed the growth of sideburn next to his right ear. “I was sure that old brute would die in the freeze last winter.”

Pierce propped one booted foot on a nearby tree stump and rested an elbow on his thigh. “Last time I saw him, he was thin, and his coat was falling out in lumps. It was an awful thing to see.” He glanced at Jake from the corner of his eye. The boy seemed to absorb every word of their conversation.

“How we gonna catch him?” The thrill of adventure resonated in Jake’s question.

Pierce hadn’t planned on Jake doing anything but tagging along, but the kid was so pumped to help, Pierce couldn’t resist the urge to give him a task to handle.

Art rubbed his chin where the recently shaved beard had been. “Guess we’ll try and lasso the beast.”

“You think he’ll stay still for that?” Pierce and the horse were not friends.

Jake glowed with restrained excitement. “He will if one of us distracts him.”

Pierce stared at Art. Silent communication passed between them. “It might just work,” Art said. Pierce nodded his head. They’d try the boy’s idea. If it worked, it would do more for the kid’s morale than any pep talk either of them could have given him.

“Jake, do you think you can get his attention while Art puts a noose around him—I mean a lasso—and I grab him by the tether. If we both have a rope on him, maybe he won’t get away this time.
